two or three weeks ago, I went down to Southampton, and my train was delayed
in Salisbury as the train went out of order...
And, one of my friend who went back from Southampton to Bath yesterday was also
delayed by about half an hour...
I have been in Bath for 4 years, and the train station has been closed for engineering
work for more than 4 times now...
Three weeks ago, my journey to Swindon was affected totally by enginnering work
and rail-replacement and I had to stay in Bath for one more night!!
ANNOYING!
The HK railway system and the UK railway system of tracks incomparable. Plus regular engineering works can ensure the quality of the tracks. Much better than fixing the track after the fatal accidents at Hatfield and Potters Bar.
If I remember right, Network Rail can now replace 2km of rail per hour. I wonder how efficient is the HK railway maintenace team then. Any figures for further discussion?

高速又點?如果好似澳大利亞Cityrail咁成日脫班就大件事啦!
英國既火車快得黎都唔多安全,上次劉海若單野就係最佳例證
。
For the past 10 years, Network Rail has recorded 'a good number' of fatal accidents. Not to mention accidents at the level-crossing.
In addition, using pakchi70's example, that London is so lack of an orbital railway network. The 'spider map' concept has always been targeted as out-fashioned. Imagine a city where you can cross-town in 1 hr but there is no orbital connection throughout the city! Take London as an example, you can get to Epping from West Ruslip in 75mins. However, to get to Kingston from West Ruslip by Tube + BR would be a disaterous mission!! I occasionally travel from Acton to Clapham and Clapham to Peckham, thanks to the improvements on the Silverlink Metro, I can now spend less time for my first leg. But the half-an-hourly Southern service to Peckham is just awful. With the East London Line extension, hopefully this will ease 'some' of the problem. I personally the crossrail project is just a laugh, or probably a new way to rip-off passengers and tax-payers?

You are quite lucky there! If you look at South West Train's Service. Woking Junction has been shut down completely for 2-consecutive Christmas period (23 Dec - 3 Jan) in order to fix the signals and the tracks in the latter year, which is why Stagecoach decided to have its own fleet of Rail Replacement buses.
