Yes... And the whole airport is crowed... mainly the departure hall... it take years to get through the immgration, then the waiting area are well small and also very crowed... hard to walk around in a airport like PVG with so much flights...
I would really suggest the Shanghai athority to build a bigger terminal at PVG and blow the old one up...

d 針有咩用架?邊個既design idea 黎?
系哥都等機有萬箭穿心既feel。

According to my understanding, those so called "pins" are supporting structures of the ceiling of the terminal.
Those "pins" transfer the weight of the whole ceiling to the suspending wires so that the terminal can maintains a no columns area.

If thats the purpose, I believe HKG design is better than theirs... Still no coloum but more spaces which I think is more important... At least you wont feel crowed when you are in the airport...

sorry... maybe its much harder to notice these than the odd PVG ones...
