This particular piece of news strikes me as I met this guy once (and only once) in an informal presentation at Caltech last year. I can vividly recall his cheerfulness and vigor.

The first person I met throughout my life who resorted to the no-return path of suicide. I know that life at Caltech is stressful; but with Caltech being such a top institution, I frankly don't see the point why there is anything to be unhappy about.

RIP.

Sometimes what you see is only a facade, dude.

And sometimes it can make it real tough for some people.  I don't think it's wise to follow them, but it's not very sensitive to say that "I don't see the point".  I mean, you are pointing out the fact of course, but how does this fact help?

I don't object to your view here, but what else could I have said? Of course, nothing can help the situation now. Suicides are not rare at top schools; the thing that strikes me most is that I met Jackson before, so there is a personal affiliation here.

Having spent a semester at another top school (albeit one that does not make it into the top ten on the Times ranking, which I think is a misrepresentation), I know how horrendous things can become at a top school. At the end of the day, it boils down to the student's stamina and willpower, of course. (Frankly, I think that college students in HK should stop complaining about anything if they know what a top school is like.)

People commit suicide because they have no vision of the future. But if one could appreciate and cherish one's own family, friends and various gifts, one should never have chosen the path of self-destruction.

其實年輕人應該諗下,自己去得外國/大學讀書,條命好值錢,至少比中學值錢好多.
我唔係講緊乜"生命誠可貴"的老土野
至少自己每年真係洗唔少錢,第日仲可賺唔少..

好多時諗到呢度自己就會更加錫身同愛惜自己.
