At the western edge of Crystal Palace Park is a Grade II listed building. The subway opened in 1865 as part of the High Level Crystal Palace railway station and survived the 1936 fire that gutted Crystal Palace. Designed by architect Charles Barry Jr, the station served as the terminus of the Crystal Palace and South London Junction Railway that brought 1st class passengers to the site. The station closed in 1954 and was demolished while the subway fell into disrepair.
The subway consists of 18 stone columns with teracotta and cream brick vaults. It has been recently restored with a new roof over the courtyard, opening to the public occasionally.
