Even in US, if you said you are Hong Kongese, rather then Chinese, they treat you differently, just like Taiwanese saying they are taiwanese, and those Chinese From Mainland, they usually said they are Mainland Chinese.
Especially, when crossing the Can/ US border in WA state, if you are non US/ Can passport holder, and you are HK passport holder, they treat you better then those from Mainland.
If they kind of action continue, I'm afraid one day the WTO or EU might have Tariff or other panelty to China made products (like cars, buses, etc...) then the Chinese will learn a lesson...And in my point of view, maybe the Central Government need to find a "way" to settle this case before it became an International Joke.
所以一般都要講清楚少少 係 "hongkong chinese" 或者 "i am from hongkong, china"
而唔係直接出 "hongkongese" or "i am from hongkong"

點解要係 "i am from hongkong, china"?
唔通北京人又要話 "i am from beijing, china"?
maybe in US is different la, alot US people thinks that Singapore, Taiwan, and HK are more like advance society in Asia (similar to Korea and Japan), while China is like that second world large country with alot of human rights abuse...therefore alot of times they treat Singaporean, taiwanese, and Hong Kongese differently then Mainland Chinese...
btw, alot of them cannot distinguish between Macao and Hong Kong...
